Auto Races New York State Historic Marker Dedication

Friday, December 20th, 2019 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Town of Southampton: 2415 Montauk Highway (Rte. 27), Bridgehampton, NY 11932

The Town of Southampton will host a dedication ceremony for a marker commemorating the community’s first organized street racing at the turn of the 20th century. The races were part of the Bridgehampton Fire Department’s Annual Carnival and Motor Races. The marker unveiling will take place beginning at noon on Friday, Dec. 20.

On the heels of the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Races, the Bridgehampton Fire Department’s Carnival, held annually, dating back to 1911, began offering automobile and motorcycle races in 1914. At the close of the carnival, two automobile races were held for 30-horsepower cars. The races began on Main Street and followed a course around Bridgehampton and through the scenic farmland. The races were held from 1914 until 1921.
