Dr. Mary E. Britton Women’s Suffrage Marker Dedication

St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church will host a dedication ceremony for a new marker on the National Votes for Women Trail commemorating Dr. Mary Ellen Britton, who was influential in rallying teachers to support women’s suffrage. The program will feature The Rev. Ralph Smith, National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites President Marsha Weinstein, and Dr. Karen Cotton McDaniel. McDaniel is a historian and co-editor of the highly acclaimed Kentucky African-American Encyclopedia; and, she is an expert on the history of black women in Kentucky. The marker commemorating Britton’s life and legacy is funded through the Pomeroy Foundation’s National Women’s Suffrage Marker Program.
