Walt Whitman NYS Historic Marker Dedication
May 31, 2019, will mark the 200th birthday of American poet Walt Whitman. In honor of this bicentennial celebration, the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) will be unveiling a new historic marker commemorating his birthplace. The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site located in South Huntington, N.Y. The marker will be installed along Route 110, a major thoroughfare in the Melville/Huntington area of Long Island. On the day before the dedication ceremony, the WWBA will host a “Happy Birthday Hour,” serving cake and refreshments. The program will begin at 5 p.m. at the Whitman property. Community leaders, elected officials, and international guests will be in attendance.
