The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Congregation was established in 1853 by free and formerly enslaved people living in the community of Coxsackie, New York. It was was of several hundred AME churches established across the Northeast United States at the time. Several years later, the church building was constructed in 1856.

As of 2021 the modest-sized Bethel AME church building was still standing. It is thought by some to be the oldest house of worship in the village.
