The Bolton Free Library was charted by the State of New York on December 19, 1901. Local residents held benefits such as plays and card parties to raise funds to build the current building which was completed in 1902 (Ticonderoga Sentinel, February 6, 1902. Accessed Nov. 20, 2024). The first librarian was Mrs. J.E. Stafford, followed by Mrs. Ethel Tabor, then Mrs. Etta Ingraham in 1904. All were paid $4 per month in salary.
The land on which the library sits was privately owned by Robert and Josephine Dula. Dula was a wealthy head of a tobacco company who had a summer home on Lake George (Burlington Free Press, April 29, 1926. Accessed Dec. 4, 2024). As of 2024, it wasn’t apparent if the Dulas were the landowners when the library was originally built as neither the Town of Bolton nor Warren County had copies of the original deed. However, in 1924, a few years prior to Robert’s death, the Dulas transferred the land to the Town of Bolton for $1. In 1998, the town transferred ownership of the lot to the Bolton Free Library.
