WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2026
In 1898, the Superintendent of the South Parks of Buffalo reported to the Park Commissioners that construction had begun on a conservatory. Designed by Lord and Burnham Co., the facility was intended to house botanical specimens from warmer climates.
By May 1900, the project was two years behind schedule. Reports indicated that the contractors had been paid but abandoned the work before completion. Essential infrastructure, including ventilation systems and retaining walls, was missing, rendering the buildings unsuitable for visitors or plant cultivation.
Despite these deficiencies, the Director of the Botanical Gardens reported in January 1901 that the conservatory had been open to the public during the previous year. While visitors expressed dissatisfaction with the unfinished interior, the department lacked the budget to hire new contractors. During this period, the gardens received various exotic plants, including donations from the Botanical Department of Cornell University.
By January 1902, funding remained a significant challenge and portions of the conservatory remained unfinished. However, the institution continued to expand its collection, acquiring specimens through expeditions to Jamaica and the Leeward Islands. The gardens also began hosting public school tours and experienced a surge in attendance due to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.
The conservatory was reported as complete in 1903. The facility remains open to the public as of 2026 with a wide variety of plants on display.
