WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2024

One of the earliest wire suspension structures constructed carried the Delaware & Hudson Canal over Rondout Creek. Only 5 suspension aqueducts were built, all by John A. Roebling. The High Falls single-span aqueduct replaced a two-arch stone aqueduct. Begun in 1849, construction was completed by mid-1850 at a cost of $45,406.09. While the bridge was destroyed by fire in 1916, both abutments are in good condition and demonstrate Roebling’s revolutionary suspension technology, still used in bridge construction today.
