Dr. Carolyn Lestelle Olendorf was a prominent physician in Schoharie County who served the greater Cobleskill community for 43 years. Born in Richmondville in 1874, she was the daughter of Alfred M. and Alice Rogers Olendorf. In 1899, she graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (later part of Drexel University College of Medicine). After briefly serving as a resident physician in a children’s hospital, Dr. Olendorf returned to Schoharie County in 1901 to practice medicine. She passed away in Cobleskill, NY in 1944 and was interred in the Richmondville Cemetery.

During her lifetime, Dr. Olendorf was active in the Schoharie County Medical Society, serving as president in 1938, and the Schoharie County Tuberculosis Committee. She is often remembered as the first female physician in Schoharie County. (Schoharie County Women’s History Sampler, SALT Development, 2017)
