Charles Kinne (1808-1882) started a business manufacturing wagons, carriages, and sleighs in Austerlitz, New York in circa 1847. Kinne purchased the property his business and house were on in 1845 from John Webster. Prior to John Webster, the property was owned by Lewis Bristol and it is thought that Bristol built the house standing on the property.

As Kinne developed his wagon manufacturing business, he built additional buildings including two adjacent cottages around 1873. Records show that Kinne employed men in his business and it is believed that the adjacent cottages were built to house his workers. His house, the buildings devoted to his wagon business, and the two cottages formed a neighborhood of its own in the south part of Austerlitz, at times informally referred to as “Kinneville.”
