OF ESSEX COUNTY HOME AND
FARM, AKA POOR HOUSE,

WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2022

In 1832 Essex County acquired this land as a part of the County Home and Farm, also known as the County Poor House. The County Home housed men, women and children, who were indigent, intellectually challenged, or mentally ill, in very rough and ill equipped conditions. In 2007 local volunteers, including the daughter of a former Superintendent who lived at the site, surveyed this cemetery and located and recorded 378 graves dating from 1874 to 1976 in seven rows. These were the only gravestones they found, though other graves may exist.
