In 1886, musician and teacher Julia Ettie Crane (1855-1923) founded the Crane Normal Institute of Music. The school trained public school music teachers and Julia served as its director until her death. Her obituary published in the Courier Freeman noted that she was “nationally known as a leader in the field of public school teaching.” After Julia’s death, New York State purchased the Crane Normal Institute of Music in 1926, establishing it as a department of Potsdam State Normal and Training School, later SUNY Potsdam. It continues today as the Crane School of Music, one of three schools that make up SUNY Potsdam. In 1986 Julia Crane was inducted into the Music Educators Hall of Fame.
