In the early days of Burlington, Washington, the first established school that can be remembered by locals was a one room school built in 1891. However, this school room was temporary, as the first school building was built one year later in 1892. This building served Burlington until 1928, when it is thought to have been struck by lightning. The building was torn down, and a new building was built to replace it, opening in 1929. This new building was known as the Roosevelt building.

Another grade school had been built across the street in 1909, called the Lincoln building, and this school served all grade levels while the Roosevelt building was being built. The Roosevelt building served as the high school until 1986 when it became the Burlington-Edison School District offices.
