Author, watercolorist, and book illustrator Evaleen Stein gained renown during the Golden Age of Indiana Literature (c. 1880-1920). Her poems, which drew on nature and the beauty of Indiana’s landscapes, appeared in the Indianapolis Journal and St. Nicholas, a children’s magazine. A lifelong Lafayette resident, she lived here in her “Little House of Dreams” by 1911.

Stein’s first book of poems, One Way to the Woods, was published in 1897. In the 1900s, she wrote many children’s books, including the “Little Cousin” series, drawing on history, geography, and folklore. She translated volumes of poetry, was a member of the Western Association of Writers, and served for decades as Poet Laureate of Lafayette’s scholarly Parlor Club.
