Everett Holmes was a carpenter in the village of Bridgewater. He served three terms as a village trustee in the 1960s. His efforts to beautify the village included the erection of a soldiers’ monument in 1969. In 1974, as a result of write-in ballots, Holmes was elected mayor of the village. He was one of the first African American mayors in New York State and served for several terms. He died in 1982.
