In 1860, the Village of Carthage purchased a five-acre plot from Vincent Le Ray de Chaumont for $150. Around 1883, the Village donated the land to the Fairview Cemetery Association. Over the ensuing decades, the site tripled in size, expanding from its original five acres to its current 15-acre footprint.
While the cemetery did not officially open under its current designation until 1910, the grounds hold a deeper history, with burials dating as far back as 1837.
Fairview Cemetery serves as the final resting place for the entrepreneurs, trustees, and other leaders who built the region. Notable interments include influential residents and early village trustees such as Suel Gilbert and Joseph C. Budd. The grounds reportedly hold the remains of 116 Civil War veterans. The cemetery also features dedicated memorial sections honoring those who served in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
Today, Fairview remains an active cemetery, continuing its role as a sacred space that honors people who shaped the Carthage community and beyond.
