FIRST MEETINGFREETHINKERS ASSOCIATION OF
CENTRAL & WESTERN NEW YORK
ORGANIZED HERE AUGUST 1877.
HOSTED BY JAMES M. COSAD,
ABOUT 2,000 ATTENDED.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2019
The Freethinkers Association of Central and Western New York was organized in Western New York in the town of Huron. For its time, the Freethinker’s movement was arguably counter-cultural, but popular among people such as James Madison Cosad. A successful local farmer and a strong proponent of the freethought movement, Cosad hosted this historic meeting of the Freethinkers Association on his farm in August of 1877. Roughly 2,000 people from across Central and Western New York descended on Cosad’s farm and for three days freethinkers discussed viewpoints on societal issues. As of 2020, only remnants of the farm still exist.
