Suffragist and President of the Equal Suffrage Association of North Carolina, Gertrude Weil, led her final meeting to establish the North Carolina League of Women Voters here in 1920 at the county courthouse. Born and raised in North Carolina, Gertrude Weil was an ardent supporter of woman’s suffrage and helped lead a statewide push for women to gain the right to vote. Utilizing her talents as a writer, she rallied women across the state of North Carolina to advocate for suffrage.
