The origins of baseball in the United States trace back to its evolution from British sports such as cricket. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright codified the first official rules for the New York Knickerbocker team, and the following year, the first recorded game was played in New York State. As the sport’s popularity grew, professional organizations were established- the National League in 1876 and the American League in 1901.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, baseball was largely divided by race. Local teams and leagues were segregated, and Major League Baseball maintained an informal ban on Black players until after World War II. This barrier was most famously broken when Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, having signed with the organization in late 1945.

Despite the prevailing segregation of the era, some challenges to the color line occurred in the 19th century. One documented instance took place in Rondout, New York, in August 1867, only two years after the conclusion of the Civil War. A Black team, the Seniors, competed in a two-game series against a white team, the Excelsiors. On August 20, 1867, the Excelsiors won the first match with a score of 38–15. On August 30, 1867, the Excelsiors won the second match with a score of 52–11.

While the permanent integration of professional baseball is often associated with the mid-20th century, these earlier integrated competitions demonstrate that the social and athletic boundaries of the sport were being tested decades prior. The eventual formal integration of the Major Leagues is recognized as a significant milestone within the broader Civil rights movement, but it only came due to earlier color line challenges like this one.
