In 1843 the Croton Aqueduct was constructed to bring fresh water to New York City. James Bremner was appointed the first superintendent at Dobb’s Ferry. In 1857, seven buildings were constructed to house the Aqueduct’s division superintendents. The Aqueduct was officially abandoned in 1968. The keeper’s house in Dobb’s Ferry was renovated and opened to the public in 2016 to serve as a visitor and education center.
