WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2025

On May 16, 1825, Lafayette was welcomed at Transylvania University where a reception was held in the university’s chapel. In attendance were the Governor of Kentucky and a number of prominent citizens from around the state, as well as the trustees of the University. The chapel was so crowded that the window seats were filled with people standing and the doors and passageways crowded with onlookers. Those not able to enter stood peering into the windows. Students presented odes in English, French and Latin written for the occasion and several speeches were given. Dr. Holley, University President, praised Lafayette’s absolute devotion to American freedom and cited his life story as an example for younger generations of Americans to study and respect.
