For well over a century, The Randolph Register has served as the collective memory of its community. Founded in the late 1860s, when major metropolitan newspapers focused on national headlines or regional politics, The Register carved out a crucial niche: it provided the “hyper-local” intelligence that residents needed to navigate their daily lives.
From its inception, The Register was built on the principle of civic participation. Chief editors William A. Sherman and A. L. Topliff, who steered the publication through its formative years in the late 1860s and early 1870s, established a grassroots reporting model. They actively encouraged organizations and local individuals to submit information including town meeting minutes, reports from the local fire department and school board proceedings. The paper also featured social news such as births, deaths, and community gatherings that defined the local experience. The Randolph Register operated as a weekly publication, released on Thursdays.
The late 20th century brought significant economic challenges for small-town journalism as digital media and changing reader habits disrupted traditional publishing models. In 1990, facing mounting financial pressure, The Register made a strategic pivot to survive. It transitioned from a weekly newspaper to a monthly magazine format. To maintain its connection with the readership, the paper implemented a $10 annual subscription fee, prioritizing sustainability and quality over the frantic pace of weekly news cycles.
Today, the publication is still released in monthly installments, although the business now operates under a new “Doing Business As” (DBA) name, Register Graphics. In addition to publishing The Randolph Register, this firm also serves the community as a professional printing and design center. It is said to be the oldest continuously operating business in the Town of Randolph.
