RUMORED TO LURK IN THE
DEPTHS OF LAKE NORMAN
INSPIRING COUNTLESS TALES
& SIGHTINGS OVER DECADES.
NORTH CAROLINA FOLKLIFE INSTITUTE
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2026
This legend originates from the oral tradition of the indigenous people of the Catawba Nation in a region North of modern-day Charlotte, North Carolina. Native people would share stories of sightings and encounters with snake-like creatures dwelling in the Catawba River.
In 1963, the Cowans Ford Dam was built on the river to facilitate the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant. A nearby valley was flooded, and Lake Norman was created. The lake is said to encompass over 30,000 acres and 520 miles of shoreline across four North Carolina counties. Ever since, visitors have flocked to the area for recreational activities such as water sports, fishing, camping, and hiking.
Over time, people have consistently reported sightings of a peculiar creature lurking in Lake Norman. There are several theories as to what the monster may be, including a mutated fish spawned by the nuclear plant, an alligator, a gar, or an extremely large catfish. However, most agree that the creature resembles a several-foot-long serpent-like fish with a dorsal fin, flippers, and long whiskers. Divers, boaters, fishermen, and others have experienced terrifying encounters with an immense, dark figure mysteriously protruding from the lake.
Although it is known for causing terror, the lake monster is also beloved by community members, who fondly call it “Normie”. Normie sightings are still reported, and the monster’s popularity continues to rise. This lake creature has become widely commercialized in the local community and beyond with books, songs, media coverage, and toys.
