This marker celebrates a place name in Albany County which is no longer use, but which is memorialized in a festival and oral history. New Salem was originally called Punkintown, a name which originated from a legend. According to the story, a sow and her litter were able to live inside a “punkin,” because the “punkins” grown here were so large.
