Reverend Fay Hovey Purdy (1816-1894) was a well known Methodist evangelist in his day. Purdy built a substantial pier at this location which served as a boat landing and wharf for his sawmill, also located on this site. At one time he was the owner of a Camp Meeting location at Lake Bluff where he served as Methodist Camp Meeting director. He died in 1894 at the age of 79 and was buried at Palmyra, NY.
