The Railroad Museum of the Niagara Frontier, opened in 2003, appropriately has a direct connection to the railroad history of the region, operating in a former brick freight depot constructed by the Erie Railroad.
The building, having recently celebrated its centennial in 2023, replaced an earlier wood depot which burned down in 1920.
The North Tonawanda Evening News reported on December 18th, 1922:
“New Freight House Nearing Completion”: Arrangements are being made by employees of the Erie railroad freight house to move into their new quarters. It is expected that the new structure will be completed by the last week in January. The new freight house is located at the foot of Christiana street, across the track from their temporary headquarters.
The building was finished the following year and would operate as a freight depot during the following decades. Eventually, Conrail would take possession of the depot, and in 1987 the Buffalo Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society would purchase the depot from them with plans to renovate the structure. In 2003, the former railroad depot opened as a museum for the public, dedicated to regional railroad history. The museum is currently operated by the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society.
