SALT PRODUCTION
THIS AREA IN THE 1820S WAS

SUN'S HEAT TO EVAPORATE
BRINE FROM LOCAL SPRINGS.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2013

One of the major industries in the City of Syracuse was the production of salt. Supplied by natural brine springs in the area, Syracuse gained the nickname of Salt City. In this area in the 1820s was one of the first local sites used to make salt. Workers constructed pools and sheds to store the brine water and harnessed the heat of the sun to evaporate the water, making salt. At the height of the salt industry, over 80% of the nation’s salt came from Syracuse.
