German-American Samuel Helm arrived in the area what was once the village of Buffalo in 1809. He worked as a ferryman until he was killed during a British Raid in the War of 1812. While Helm passed away years ago his memory lives on as the namesake of The Steuben Society of America – Samuel Helm Unit #144, an organization that celebrates the European heritage of its members.
