Sojourner Truth arrived in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, on July 4, 1843. She joined the local Methodist congregation at their newly built church on Main Street as they prepared to celebrate Independence Day. A procession led by the Friends of Temperance and composed of other local temperance societies ended with a dinner, reading of the Declaration of Independence and several speeches. Truth remained in the village for three weeks, then proceeded to Huntington where she took a boat to Connecticut.
