Sitting on the edge of the Lesser Known Wilderness State Forest is a small family burial ground, known as the Staring Cemetery.
The Staring Cemetery is the final resting place of members of the Staring and Campbell families, who trace their roots back to the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War and who arrived in the Martinsburg area about the 1820s. The earliest known burial in the cemetery occurred ca. 1829, and among those interred is at least one veteran from the War of 1812.
Recently, the Martinsburg Historical Society and other community partners have cleared the cemetery and made it more accessible, while also providing a rededication and military honors in 2023.
