Official meeting minutes show that the Town of Canton held a special town meeting on May 2, 1877 “to vote upon the question of building a new Town Hall.” The following year, the contract for the new Town Hall in Canton was awarded to E. D. & A. Harrison of Fredonia. External work on the new Town Hall was completed in August 1879. The new building included an opera house on the second floor, which hosted plays and area graduations. The Town Hall and opera house also hosted civic and political events, such as women’s suffrage lectures, local Republican conventions, and various local group meetings. In February 1962, a early morning fire destroyed the Town Hall, along with 13 other business and commercial establishments. It caused an estimated $150,000 in damages.
