The town of Vestal in Broome County was established by a New York State legislative act passed on January 22, 1823. Early industry in the town consisted of lumbering and farming. After the 1920s, land in the town was subdivided to create housing for workers of companies located in nearby Endicott and Johnson City. By 1961, Vestal was home to Harpur College, part of the State University of New York system. The college was renamed State University of New York at Binghamton, and later called Binghamton University. As of 2023, Vestal remains home to Binghamton University, one of the largest employers in the area.
