By 1824, the approximately five-mile-long Vincent Canal was opened as part the 108-mile-long Schuylkill Navigation, a canal system completed by the Schuylkill Navigation Company. The canal system was used as a commercial waterway, mostly in transporting coal along the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania, linking Port Carbon to Philadelphia. The Vincent Canal portion led directly to the early development of Spring City, Pennsylvania which was originally chartered as Springville.
Declining in use throughout the early 20th century, much of the Schuylkill Navigation was filled in 1950, including the Vincent Canal through Spring City. As of 2024, a portion of the canal berm is still visible along Bridge Street in the borough.
