This legend has its origins in an oral history of the tavern told to a former owner in 1912. Henry Chambers (1845-1932) told Catherine Lukens, former owner, that he remembered coming to dances here and saw the Foote-Legge-Stocking Tavern sign at the cellar door. Their father was a toll-keeper along this road. Henry believed the name was based on the names of Stillman Foote, Billius Stocking and an unidentified man named Legge who may have been the tavern keeper, all associated with the tavern. The name has endured since.
