Banker, abolitionist, and politician Calvin Whitford (1823-1902) once lived in the community of Brookfield, NY. Some sources suggest that his home was utilized as a station for the Underground Railroad. In 1846 Whitford founded the Brookfield Liberty Association and served as its treasurer. The organization’s missions was to bring about bring about the end of slavery. In addition to his abolitionist activities, Whitford was elected Madison County Clerk in 1865. He resided in Brookfield until his passing in 1902. His death notice, published in an October 23, 1902 edition of the Green Chenango American reads as follows:

Calvin Whitford, Brookfield’s venerable banker and who for several years represented that town on the board of supervisors died at his home in the village last week.

As of 2021, Whitford’s former home still stood and served as a private residence.
