Jacob Shook was made a Captain in the Dutchess County Militia in 1811 and resigned as a Vice Captain in 1816. In 1822 he was elected Supervisor of the Town of Milan and was reelected the following year. In at least 1831 and 1833 he was Postmaster. In 1834 Jacob and his brother Peter Shook donated this land (for the price of $1) to the Methodist Society to build the Shookville Church, of which he was a founding member. The new church was dedicated June 7, 1834 and featured preaching by the Rev. Mr. Rice, Rev. Mr. Evan and other clergy.
