Christian Brown was born in 1741. He settled in the Cobleskill area and established a home, farm, and mill. Brown served as a Captain in the 15th regiment, also known as Vrooman’s Regiment, of the Albany County militia. When the Battle of Cobleskill began at the start of June 1778, Brown led a small local militia as 2nd in command that fought with a handful of Continental troops against a group of Native Americans and Loyalists. Much of Cobleskill was destroyed, and the militia was forced to retreat. Many of the Cobleskill inhabitants were forced to flee the area.
County Judge John M. Brown, Christian’s brother, later wrote that his brother’s farm and mill survived due to the wishes of Loyalists who wanted to keep it for themselves. He also recalled his brother’s leadership and involvement at the battle.
Following the War, Christian Brown returned to Cobleskill and continued to work on his farm and run the mill, likely until his death in 1809.
