The Champlain Canal ran from Waterford to Whitehall, New York, connecting the rich resources of the upper Hudson Valley and the markets and manufacturers of Montreal and New York City. According to a History of the Canal System of the State of New York, a supplement to the 1906 Annual Report of the State Engineer and Surveyor, canal commissioners first proposed a canal between Lake Champlain and the Hudson River in 1812. Worked commenced on the canal in 1817 and was completed by 1823, with the canal in operation on September 10th of that year.

The hamlet of Coveville developed on the Champlain Canal in the town of Saratoga in eastern Saratoga County. Thanks to the canal, by 1874, an ice house, store, stables, and homes had been established in Coveville. Local merchants transported goods such as potatoes and ice on the canal for shipment to New York City via the Hudson Railroad. As of 2022, some remains of the Champlain Canal are visible along U.S. Route 4 in Saratoga.
