The Marion Collegiate Institute was granted its charter by the New York State Board of University Regents in July 1855. Operations began that October in temporary space leased from John S. Rich, and by 1856, the Institute had constructed a permanent school building on North Main Street.

The Institute operated as a private school until the early 20th century. Facing a decline in attendance, local voters held a meeting in July 1904 and decided to establish a Union Free School in District 1. This transition shifted the Institute’s role from a private academy to a public school. The original 1856 building continued to serve the district in this new capacity for the next twenty years.

In 1925, the facility underwent a significant expansion and modernization project. This was driven by a new trend in educational organization known as district consolidation. To support this centralized model, the district acquired “trucks” to transport children living in outlying areas, serving as an early experiment with the modern school bus concept.

In September 1925, the district publicly showcased these new transport vehicles alongside the significantly enlarged building. Although the site has been modified over time, the original 1856 structure was integrated into the expansion and remains standing as of 2026 as part of the school’s auditorium. The building has continued to serve the community as its public high school since the 1925 consolidation.
