Trains serve as important conduit for transporting goods and people. This was especially true in the hamlet of Elma Centre. The local R.R. Depot built ca. 1870, was the heart of the community. The depot facilitated the arrival of coal and lumber dealers, a blacksmith, saloon, post office and school.
