The Fire Station, sometimes known as the Hose House, was one of the original buildings constructed during the 1894-1905 development of the Plattsburgh Military Reservation. The building retains the basic look of its original design. In 1895, it held hose reels and a Rumsey Hook & Ladder Truck. Remodeling took place between 1927 and 1940 to provide quarters for firefighters and increased storage for fire equipment. At the time of its closure in 2008, the station was the home of Rescue Hose Five, a volunteer firefighting department whose main duties were to provide air-packs to firefighters at fire scenes.
Plattsburgh Military Reservation was federal property since the War of 1812 until it closed in 1995 as part of base realignment. Originally an Army base, the site was decommissioned toward end of WWII. It was then briefly a Naval officer training school. The barracks and other buildings became Champlain College in May 1946 as one of the Upper New York Colleges created to handle the onslaught of post-WWII GI’s seeking higher education under the GI bill. The college closed in 1953 after Commencement as the U.S. military wanted to reclaim the campus for the Air Force.
