It was at this site that the first Rochester Institute of Technology campus was located. The first school established in 1829, was a liberal arts college known as the Rochester Athenaeum. In 1885 a technical school, the Mechanics Institute, was established on the same site. In 1891 the two schools merged and in 1944 the school changed its name to the Rochester Institute of Technology which it is still known as today.
