In the village of Waterville in Oneida County, New York one can find the site of the George Washington Loomis family homestead, the once headquarters of the notorious Loomis Gang. The Loomis Gang’s criminal activities were the subject of public outrage, rumor, debate, and fascination. Their impact on the surrounding communities has been kept alive through oral and written storytelling, historical publications, reenactments, and legend. Local anecdotes and narratives of all kinds have grown up around the memory of the Loomis Gang.

In 1866, the Loomis homestead was burned to the ground by vigilantes. Although nothing remains of the former headquarters, the site continues to serve as a reminder of the historical events that inspired the rich local lore surrounding the Loomis Gang.
