The original land for Greenwood was donated to the Greenwood Cemetery Association in 1851 by Luther Wilson, a son of Reuben Wilson, the family after which the Town and Village of Wilson are named. The initial cemetery was approximately 7 acres but later enlarged. There are no known remaining records for Greenwood Cemetery prior to 1891. This includes a time period during which an older cemetery in the town was closed and the remains buried there reinterred in Greenwood. Veterans from the Revolutionary War and many later wars rest there.
