The H.G. Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company made Lyons, N.Y. the “Peppermint Capital of the World”. The industry also helped develop the economy of upstate New York and demonstrated the importance and influence of the Erie Canal to the state’s growth during the 19th century. Hiram Hotchkiss won 17 international gold medals for his essential oils, most were for his oil of peppermint. The company stayed in the Hotchkiss family throughout its existence and the last president, Anne Hotchkiss, died at age 95 in 2011, having retired in 1982. The Lyons Heritage Society has given historic tours of the H.G. Hotchkiss Museum since that time.
