Charles M. Hamilton and his wife Bertha lived in this house in Ripley, NY. Charles was born in Ripley on January 23, 1874. He attended the Ripley High School, the Fredonia Normal School, and later the Pennsylvania Military College at Chester. Charles was a prominent Republican politician who was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1906, the New York State Senate in 1908 and reelected in 1910. In 1912 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and reelected in 1914 and reelected in 1916, but did not seek reelection in 1918. He served in the Sixty-third, Sixty-fourth, and Sixty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1913-March 3, 1919), including as minority whip (Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses). After his political service he returned to Ripley to farm, and engaged the production of oil and gas in Kansas. He died in Miami Beach, Florida, on Jan. 3, 1942 and was buried in Quincy Rural Cemetery in Ripley.
