Herbert Estes was a well known resident of Ausable Chasm, NY. Born in Massachusetts in 1841, he was a veteran of the Civil War (enlisting in Mass.) who was held prisoner in Salisbury, North Carolina. During his imprisonment he kept diary of his experience. He worked in Canada and in Ausable Chasm, where he was a machinist after his arrival in 1873. Following his arrival, he invented new and improved machinery. Estes later purchased a paper mill, which he operated until just before his death in 1916.
