ALBEMARLE CHAPTER NSDAR
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2025
In early June 1781, British troops under Lt. Col. Tarleton attempted to disrupt the new United State government and thereby end the war in their favor. Raiding Charlottesville, VA, the British troops sought to capture the Virginia Governor and member of the General Assembly meeting in the city at that time. Warned that the British were on their way to his home at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson sent his family ahead to the home of Col. John Cole II. Knowing he would be found and pursued if he traveled public roads, Jefferson made his way through the wooded areas, finally rejoining his family at the Cole home. (John Coles II, Monticello.org. Accessed 2 July 2025). After dining, the Jeffersons crossed the Rockfish River at Joplin’s Ford and arrived at Col. Hugh Rose’s in Amherst, VA, about thirty miles away (Geddes, dhr.virginia.gov. Accessed 2 July 2025). Jefferson returned to Monticello alone in June 7 after learning the British had left. His family remained at the Rose home until the end of July (Memorandum Books, 1781, Founders.archives.gov. Accessed 2 July 2025).
