DAWN HEADING FOR CHARLESTON.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2025

General Lafayette and his entourage spent the night at the home of the Ralph Izard family as they were traveling from Columbia to Charleston, South Carolina. Ralph Izard III (1742-1804) had lent money to the Patriot cause and later served in the Continental Congress.

The home no longer stands as it was virtually destroyed in the Charleston earthquake of 1886. As of 1964, the property is home to Charleston Southern University.
