A volunteer fire department was organized in Marion in April of 1914 with 27 people. In January 1917, the Marion Fire Commission acquired the “Merson corner lot” for the erection of a concrete building to house the new department, which included hose, chemical engine, and hook and ladder companies. In 1958 a new building was constructed house the fire department.
