WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2023

In the 1790s, brothers Aaron and David Marvin established a mill complex on Oaks Creek in what would come to be known as the hamlet of Fly Creek in Otsego County, New York. In addition to their saw and grist mills, the brothers also built a home not far from the creek, where they lived until around 1812.

In April 1812, Aaron sold his share of the property to his brother, and relocated to Springwater in Livingston County, New York. He died there in February 1845. Soon after Aaron sold his share of the property, David sold the house and mill complex, but remained in Fly Creek. For many years, he lived on a nearby farm, raising cattle and sheep and producing butter and cheese along with wool. David passed away in February 1855 and is buried in the Old Chapel Burying Ground in Fly Creek.

The Marvin brothers’ mill complex on Oaks Creek continued to be the site of mill activity through to the early twentieth century. As of 2023, their house still stands at 109 Cemetery Road in Fly Creek.
